Sendai, the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, is the biggest city with a population of over 1 million in the Tohoku region, northeast of Japan. It takes about two hours from Tokyo to Sendai by the Shinkansen or bullet train. The city was founded in 1600 by Date Masamune, one of the most popular warlords in Japanese history. There are some scenic spots and hot spring resorts in the surrounding area, and in particular, Yamadera is a famous sightseeing spot related to great haiku master Matsuo Basho.

Major Destinations or Activities
In fact, Yamadera is located in Yamagata Prefecture, but since it’s included in the 2-day unlimited ride ticket purchased at Sendai Station, I decided to organize a guided tour as Greater Sendai. Of course, you can enjoy the superb view during the beautiful green season when Matsuo Basho visited, but the autumn leaves season is also recommended. Although not as well-known as Yamadera, Jogi-san, which is a date spot for Sendai citizens, also has many attractions, and eating fried tofu in the temple town will be a good memory for you.
